Individual Designs

Planning an individually designed narrowboat can seem a little daunting, but you can be sure that we will take a personal interest in your project, making it an enjoyable and rewarding experience.  We will gladly offer advice regarding what works and what doesn't so that you can be sure your new boat will be a narrowboat to be proud of.

One popular approach is to start with one of our standard designs and make a list of extras and amendments you would like to incorporate.  NB Danceaway is an example of this approach and was based on our Chestnut60 design, whereas NB Acen was built as an individual design and was so well received that she inspired our Hazel60 luxury specification.

Alternatively you might prefer to create your own "wish-list" for discussion, perhaps including your own sketches or articles and pictures from magazines.  NB Adrastea , NB Coriolis and NB Lazy Daizy are examples of very different designs, each of which was created to the individual owners' specific requirements.

We have listed below some of the more obvious choices to be made, but if you can't see what you want, please don't hesitate to ask.

When you have made your choices we will create for you an individual specification with floor-plan and estimated cost for further discussion.

Some of the choices to be made:

• Boat length 

• Boat style - traditional, semi-trad or cruiser stern

• Engine

• Bowthruster?

• Internal layout

• Technical specifications (eg electrical system requirements, satellite cabling)

• Heating system (eg gas or diesel central heating, solid fuel stove)

• Windows, portholes (opening?) or combination?

• Houdini hatch?

• Cratch with canvas cover?

• Cassette or "pump-out" toilet ?

• Shower cubicle, corner bath or standard bath ?

• Washing machine ? microwave ? etc etc

• Woodwork:

  • Choice of wood used eg Oak, Ash, Cherry

  • Finish to woodwork eg varnish or paint in satin, matt or gloss

  • Flooring eg hardwood planking, carpet?

• Finishes:

  • External paintwork colours, coach-lines, sign-writing

  • Colour/design/finish of paints, tiles, worktops, carpets & curtains
